Berkley unveils its bait range revolution

Tackle giant Berkley is about to launch a huge range of 190 new bait products on to the UK market, with carp, specimen and match anglers all set to be well catered for.

Among the new releases will be a range of boilies, pellets, prepared particles and liquids marketed under the ‘Gulp!’ banner which have been formulated after years of painstaking research at the company’s specialised Product Innovation Centre in Holland.

Last week, as editor of UKCarp, I went to the company’s laboratory to get a sneak preview of the products, which are due to hit the nation’s tackle shelves in the middle of next month.

The driving force behind Berkley’s extensive new collection of baits is Belgian chemist Frans de Ceulaer, a man who has been involved in carp bait production since the early 1990s. Frans has specialised in creating flavours, attractors, appetite stimulators and palatants with a proven track record in the aquaculture world.

The specialised laboratory has taken nearly three years to formulate the recipes for eight different boilies, all of which have been thoroughly field-tested.

“We start by pinpointing the carp-attracting chemicals at a molecular level, then build from there using natural ingredients to form a bait, including a range of amino acids,” revealed Frans, the product innovation manager.

The range of boilie flavours includes Fresh Fruit One, Irish Cream, Particle Bomb, Pineapple Fever, Tuna and Spice, Seafood One, Halibut and Crab and Squid Liver. Each will be available in 12mm, 16mm, 20mm and 24mm sizes, with 1kg retailing for £9.99 and a 3kg bucket for £27.99. Matching ultra-buoyant pop-ups will also be available, with each 100g tub costing £5.99, complemented by bottles of matching boilie dips retailing at £9.99 per 100ml.

Boilies aside, Berkley is also launching a number of ready-prepared particles, including Chilli Hemp, Spod Blend, Micro Blend, Corn, Peanuts and Wheat, costing £4.99 for 800ml or £9.99 for the larger 1,800ml jars.

Another new product that will be particularly suited to all types of angling is the company’s nine-strong range of new pellet types in a variety of sizes (4.5mm,
6mm and 10mm) which will be available in 900g and 3kg bags.

The Tigernut, Fresh Fruit, Bloodworm and Robin Red flavours are all well worth a look.

Small pots of hooker pellets in 9mm and 18mm sizes will also be launched, with flavours set to include Squid, Garlic, Halibut and Tutti Frutti, and the new Gulp! range is completed by a whole host of liquids and oils, all with loads of fish-attracting power. Check out the range in your local tackle shop from mid-September!
