Youngster catches 543lb match fishing haul in six hours

Gary Huth’s 600lb crown may soon be under threat from 13-year-old Josh Griffiths, who caught a massive 543lb net of carp in a recent club fishing match.

The teenager gave a masterclass in margin fishing to the rest of the 14-strong Cwm Angling Club field on their latest visit to Tirley Court Fishery in Gloucester, smashing the venue and club records too.

Over 100 carp to 9lb came to the Ebbw Vale, South Wales, youngster’s net during a manic six-hour contest which saw him finish an incredible 353lb ahead of the runner-up.

Josh is putting his success down to an unusual bait combination consisting of a 10mm banded halibut pellet tipped with a red maggot.

“Carp seem to find a large pellet much easier than a small one and the maggot gives a bit of movement and extra attraction,” said Josh.

“Lots of anglers only target the margins in the last hour, but I started and ended there because a large tree provided cover near my peg and gave the fish confidence. It’s my biggest ever match weight by miles,” he admitted.
