One bite in four days, but it’s a first-ever thirty

Harry Iliffe only had one bite during his four-day session on the Carp Society’s Horseshoe Lake, but he wasn’t complaining when it resulted in his first-ever thirty in the form of this 32lb 8oz mirror.

Positioning himself in a swim covering a gap between two bays, the 26-year-old Shoreditch-based account manager presented his hookbaits over 3kg of spod mix in an area of light silkweed at 70yds.

He said: “The take came out of the blue on the third day and the fish gave a good account of itself, but thankfully I managed to keep it out of the weed. It smashed my old pb of 24lb 2oz and it was a great feeling to break the 30lb barrier.”

To ensure he achieved a good presentation over the weed, Harry used a 15ins-long 12lb JRC fluorocarbon hooklink with a Vision Baits Ocean Protein pop-up tipped with a piece of artificial corn on a size 8 Korda Wide Gape hook.
