Gary Huth smashes world match fishing record

Gary Huth has broken his own unofficial world match fishing record by catching a monumental 682lb of carp in six hours.

The Essex matchman first made headlines two years ago when he landed 661lb of fish up to 20lb from Rockells Farm Fishery in Saffron Walden, a feat he’s now eclipsed at Hawkhurst Fish Farm in Kent.

The catch is even more impressive considering most of Gary’s 250-plus carp averaged just 3lb to 4lb to a maximum of 6lb, and he could have netted even more had he not been fishing with broken fingers on his left hand!

Now the 44-year-old believes he will soon set a new benchmark of more than 700lb if given half a chance.

The catch was made from peg 19 on Hawkhurst’s Match Lake, where Trabucco-sponsored Gary alternated between a 5m pole line and one tight to the boards down the edge.

Fishery rules dictate that a weigh-in must be conducted after three hours, followed by an hour break with the aerators on and then another three hours’ fishing. His ‘morning’ total was a ‘mere’ 260lb before he recorded an incredible 422lb in the ‘afternoon’.

“The fish seemed to lose their caution later on and came right into the edge,” explained Gary.

“When they backed off, I put a couple of sections on and caught them in deeper water for a bit. I fed four pints of maggots, two pints of casters and two pints of 4mm Pro-Plus pellets. Feeding mainly natural baits rather than pellets has caught me a lot of fish this year – I think you get less line bites and the fish stay on the bottom more,” he said.

The 44-year-old is the first angler to bank two separate 600lb-plus bags in six-hour matches. He also broke Hawkhurst’s previous venue record in May this year with 535lb.

But just how big a weight does Gary think he could amass?

“In this match I could hardly hold fish due to broken fingers sustained when I was assaulted by a customer. I’m sure I’ll catch 700lb, either later this year or in 2010. I’ve got a couple of venues earmarked, with Hawkhurst being one of them – the fish there are only going to get bigger. The carp at Rockells are already a decent size, but I’ve not been there since I caught 661lb. I might also set my sights further afield,” he revealed.
