Drennan Team England's 2009 World Championships day one result

Here's Drennan Team England’s day one scores at the 2009 coarse fishing World champs on the Lage Vaart Canal, in Holland...

Before the match England had aimed to have three of their five men catch bream and as it turned out they went one better with four slipping the net under a slab or three. What they hadn’t catered for however, was the disaster that Sean Ashby’s peg turned out to be.

Devoid of bream and holding no amount of small fish sizeable enough to hold off any bream weights, Sean was left in limbo with just a kilo and a half of bits to beat just two anglers in his mini section.

The news was better elsewhere, Alan Scotthorne netting three beam plus a solid helping of roach to cruise his section, Will Raison beaten only by a Russian with five bream as he replied with two bream of his own plus roach, Des Shipp netting a bream in the last 30 minutes and losing another foul hooked to claim third in section while Steve Gardener left it even later to win his section, netting a bream with under two minutes left to back up a big skimmer and as rake of small fish.
