14-pounder zander tops haul

All-rounder Gordon Howes got his predator fishing season off to a flying start with this 14lb 8oz zander from Grafham Water, part of a 16-fish haul he shared with boat partner Andy Black.

Gordon, who runs the Cambs-based Waterland guiding service, bounced rubber shads along the bottom in 58ft of water at the dam end of the venue to take a steady stream of fish over 7lb, including another double at 12lb.

“It was a superb day’s sport – a bit like pirk fishing for cod because you are constantly working the lure at depths of almost 60ft, occasionally getting a take. It was my first try at it, but certainly won’t be my last,” he said.
